Test first: $65 to $145 a sample
We publish no removal price for pipe or boiler insulation. The prices we found were too few and in units that do not compare.

Test
Test the wrap$65 to $145 a sample
ASB004 lists pipe insulation, mechanical insulation and furnace or boiler duct tape and wrap. Health Canada's list includes insulation around hot water pipes and tanks.
-
Risk class
If the insulation is friable, the Manual puts removal of 0.09 m² (1 sq ft) or more in the high-risk class. The contractor or consultant decides friability and the risk class on site: ask which class they assigned and why.
Low riskCovers non-friable products handled without cutting, breaking, sanding or vibrating.
Moderate risk can apply hereGlovebag work, and minor areas of friable material under 0.09 m² (1 sq ft).
High risk can apply hereRemoving 0.09 m² (1 sq ft) or more of friable insulation; work on boilers or furnaces with asbestos insulation.
Risk classes: Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual (best-practice guidance; the OHS Code is the law).

What removal costs
Pipe or boiler insulation removal No price published. Get written quotes. Compare quotes on method (glovebag or full enclosure), length of pipe, and whether air testing and disposal are included.
Glovebag or enclosure
The Manual lists glovebag work as moderate risk. Larger friable removals are high risk and need an enclosure.
Access
Pipe in an open basement ceiling is a different job from pipe inside finished walls.
Disposal
Shepard landfill only, $220 a tonne, with a $275 hard-to-handle surcharge if the packaging is not acceptable.

Clear the area
For moderate-risk work the Manual sets a final air result of less than 0.01 fibres per cubic centimetre. For high-risk work the enclosure stays under negative pressure until air tests confirm fibre levels are low enough to take it down. For a Calgary demolition, the City's permit guide asks for a clearance letter stating that all asbestos materials have been properly removed and the area is acceptable for demolition. The sources we read set no other format, so ask for a letter that shows:
- The work area and the materials it covers
- The risk class the job was done under
- The air results, with the lab method (PCM or TEM)
- Who took the samples, and whether they are independent of the removal crew
- Whether the lab takes part in a proficiency testing program
- The date
Air clearance testing runs about $200 to $700 per area. Clearance testing costs
Calgary and Alberta rules that apply
- The employer must notify Alberta OHS at least 72 hours before work that may release asbestos fibres. The Code sets no minimum quantity.
- Every worker who enters an asbestos restricted area must carry an original, valid Alberta asbestos worker card. There is no contractor licence for asbestos abatement in Alberta.
- A City of Calgary building or demolition permit needs the Asbestos Abatement Information Form before release. The form is not a permit to do abatement.
- Asbestos waste goes to Shepard landfill only: permit (no fee), appointment by 10 a.m. the day before, wetted, double-bagged in 6-mil polyethylene and sealed. $220 a tonne; $275 hard-to-handle surcharge.
- Any deposit before the work is finished means the business must hold an Alberta prepaid contracting licence. Contracts of $200 or more must be in writing.
Ask before you sign
- Glovebag or full enclosure, and why
- Which risk class the job is priced as
- Whether air testing and Shepard disposal are included
- Who files the 72-hour OHS notification
Is the tape on my furnace ducts part of this?
ASB004 lists furnace or boiler duct tape and wrap as its own item, next to pipe and mechanical insulation. Test it as a separate material.
Which insulation does the Manual name?
The Manual's list covers insulation on boilers, pipes and ducts, and insulation block made of magnesia or calcium silicate.
Why is there no price on this page?
The prices we found for pipe insulation used different units (per linear foot, per section, per job) and too few came from Calgary. A number from them would mislead you.
