Test
Test the joint compound$65 to $145 a sample
Alberta's ASB004 bulletin lists drywall mud among materials with a higher risk of asbestos in buildings from before 1990. The Manual notes joint compound may not have been mixed evenly, so one room's result does not cover the whole house.
-
Risk class
The Manual puts renovation or hand demolition involving drywall joint compound that contains asbestos in the moderate-risk class.
Low riskDoes not cover cutting or demolishing walls finished with asbestos joint compound.
Moderate risk applies hereRenovation or hand demolition involving drywall joint compound containing asbestos. Final air results must be less than 0.01 f/cc.
High riskApplies where the work area may become a restricted area, and to dry removal of friable material.
Risk classes: Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual (best-practice guidance; the OHS Code is the law).

What removal costs
Asbestos removal, general (all materials) $4 to $10 per sq ft Drywall mud on its own Too few published Calgary prices. Get written quotes for the same scope. Ask every contractor for the square footage behind the price so the quotes can be compared.
Wall area
How many walls and ceilings come down, and whether the drywall goes with the compound.
Air testing
For moderate-risk work the Manual sets a final air result of less than 0.01 f/cc, with aggressive sampling if a containment was used.
Disposal
Shepard landfill only: wetted, double-bagged in 6-mil polyethylene and sealed, $220 a tonne.

Clear the area
For moderate-risk work the Manual sets a final air result of less than 0.01 fibres per cubic centimetre. For high-risk work the enclosure stays under negative pressure until air tests confirm fibre levels are low enough to take it down. For a Calgary demolition, the City's permit guide asks for a clearance letter stating that all asbestos materials have been properly removed and the area is acceptable for demolition. The sources we read set no other format, so ask for a letter that shows:
- The work area and the materials it covers
- The risk class the job was done under
- The air results, with the lab method (PCM or TEM)
- Who took the samples, and whether they are independent of the removal crew
- Whether the lab takes part in a proficiency testing program
- The date
Air clearance testing runs about $200 to $700 per area. Clearance testing costs
Calgary and Alberta rules that apply
- The employer must notify Alberta OHS at least 72 hours before work that may release asbestos fibres. The Code sets no minimum quantity.
- Every worker who enters an asbestos restricted area must carry an original, valid Alberta asbestos worker card. There is no contractor licence for asbestos abatement in Alberta.
- A City of Calgary building or demolition permit needs the Asbestos Abatement Information Form before release. The form is not a permit to do abatement.
- Asbestos waste goes to Shepard landfill only: permit (no fee), appointment by 10 a.m. the day before, wetted, double-bagged in 6-mil polyethylene and sealed. $220 a tonne; $275 hard-to-handle surcharge.
- Any deposit before the work is finished means the business must hold an Alberta prepaid contracting licence. Contracts of $200 or more must be in writing.
Ask before you sign
- How many square feet of wall and ceiling the price covers
- Whether final air testing is included, and who does it
- Whether Shepard disposal, the permit and the appointment are in the price
- Who files the 72-hour OHS notification
Does one negative sample clear every wall?
Not on its own. The Manual notes joint compound may not have been mixed evenly, so the content can vary within one house.
