Asbestos Testing & Sampling
Bulk samples of drywall mud, ceiling texture, floor tile, insulation or siding sent to a lab before you cut, sand or demolish anything in a pre-1990 Calgary home.
Published Calgary-area lab rates run about $65 to $145 per bulk sample, less per sample in packages. A written report and turnaround time should be in the price.
Find an Abatement ContractorAbout Asbestos Testing & Sampling
Testing answers the only question that matters before a renovation in an older Calgary house: does this material contain asbestos? Alberta's own OHS bulletin says a building put up before 1990 has a higher chance that some of its materials contain it, and lists the usual suspects: ceiling tiles, drywall mud, stucco and siding, duct tape and wrap, pipe and mechanical insulation, plaster, roofing, vermiculite insulation, vinyl floor tiles and sheet flooring.
Looking at a material tells you nothing. The Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual says the only way to know whether vermiculite contains asbestos is to have it tested, and the same is true of joint compound and stipple, which the Manual notes were not always mixed evenly.
A sampler takes small pieces of each suspect material, bags and labels them, and sends them to a lab. The standard lab method is polarized light microscopy, which reports asbestos content from 1 to 100 percent and reports anything under that as less than 1 percent. The Manual recommends labs that take part in a proficiency-testing program, though Alberta law does not require lab accreditation.
In Calgary, a bulk sample typically costs about $65 to $145 each from published price lists read in September 2026, with multi-sample packages priced lower per sample. Ask how many samples the job needs, whether the fee includes a written report, and how long results take. Health Canada's advice is simple: hire a professional to test for asbestos before renovating or remodelling, and do not disturb material you suspect.
