How We Set These Ranges

Last reviewed 2026-09-28.

Where the numbers come from

Each range is aggregated from prices that companies published online, read in September 2026, with Calgary-area prices preferred. We never take a single company's price, and we do not name the businesses the ranges come from.

When we publish no number

A range needs enough independent published prices in comparable units. Where we found too few, the page says "too few published prices" and gives the general asbestos removal figure (about $4 to $10 per square foot across all materials) only as a separate line. That applies to popcorn and stipple ceilings, drywall mud, floor tile and sheet vinyl, and a whole-home hazardous materials assessment. For pipe and boiler insulation the prices we found were in units that do not compare, so that page publishes no removal price. For lead paint removal we found no Canadian prices at all, so there is no lead paint cost page.

Fixed figures

Shepard landfill's asbestos rate ($220 a tonne since February 2026, with a $275 hard-to-handle surcharge) comes from the City of Calgary's commercial landfill rates page. The $200 written-contract line comes from Service Alberta's prepaid contracting rules.

Where the rules come from

Risk classes and air-test levels come from the Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual, which is best-practice guidance; the legal duties (the 72-hour notification, worker cards, waste containers) come from the Alberta OHS Code. Mould size bands come from Health Canada and CMHC; the advice on air testing comes from Alberta Health Services. Permit and disposal rules come from the City of Calgary.

What a range is, and is not

A range is where published prices for a typical job land. It is not a quote for your home: size, access, the material, the risk class and what the quote includes all move the price. Use the range to decide what to ask, and compare quotes line by line.

How often we review them

We review every range at least once a year, and sooner when a landfill rate or a rule changes.
